In addition to ranking U.S. universities and colleges, the U.S. News & World Report implements and publishes the Best Global Universities Rankings for the learner in the U.S. to consider enrolling in overseas universities as well as to provide insights into how U.S. universities compare globally. Best Global Universities Rankings evaluates and ranks universities by analyzing scientific databases provided by Clarivate Analytics InCites Corporation.
The 2023 Best Global Universities Rankings ranked 2,165 participating universities from 95 countries (up 1,750 universities compared to the 2022 ranking). Besides VNU, Vietnam had 4 other universities ranked, namely Ton Duc Thang University (223rd), Duy Tan University (317th), VNU, Ho Chi Minh City (1116th), Hanoi University of Science and Technology (1570th). Hanoi Medical University was evaluated, but was not ranked.
Regarding the 13 indicators of the U.S. News & World Report’s ranking methodology, VNU’s Publications has significantly improved with an increase of 59 places compared to the 2022 ranking. In addition, VNU’s Total citations featured in the top 1% most cited in their respective fields and jumped 27 places in the world rankings. Also in this ranking, VNU’s Engineering was ranked for the first time at 636th globally and VNU’s Engineering publications featured in the top 10% most cited (45th globally). Besides, VNU’s Physics remained ranked 64th.
943 Asian universities were ranked. Top 5 ranked by region included universities from China, Singapore, Hong Kong; namely Tsinghua University (China) ranked first in Asia and 23rd globally, the National University of Singapore ranked second in Asia and 26th globally, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) ranked third in Asia and 30th globally, Peking University (China) ranked fourth in Asia and 39th globally, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong) ranked fifth in Asia and 53rd globally.
Regarding the ranking methodology, Best Global Universities Rankings assesses universities by 13 indicators (see the Table below) that focus on research reputation (through survey) and research quality through data analysis published in Clarivate Analytics InCites database. In particular, only those institutions that have met the minimum threshold of at least 1,250 papers published from 2016 to 2020 and have been among the top universities in the results of Clarivate Analytics' global reputation survey, will be considered. The scholars participating in the research evaluation are selected authors from the Web of Science database, including the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) and Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A & HCI) .
